Loyal fans of a quality wool coat will tell you that it’s a must-have part of any cold-weather wardrobe. The best wool coats provide warmth and protection from the elements, and they look stylish. It’s an instant fashion way to match any outfit, whether it’s sportswear and sneakers or chunky sweaters and jeans.
L.L.Bean Classic Lambswool Peacoat
Wool coats never go out of style, so if you’re going to invest in one, it only makes sense that you want to buy a coat that will last for many years. While LLBean isn’t known for haute couture, the brand excels at crafting high-quality staples, and we were blown away by the quality of this coat. Made from 100% lambswool, this short coat feels softer, thicker and warmer than other short coats we’ve tried. The brand’s signature Thinsulate insulation adds warmth without looking bulky, and we were impressed by the way the lining is stitched and quilted so it doesn’t sag over time. The buttons on the short coat tend to loosen after repeated use, but all the stitching on this coat looks clean and strong, and the coat also comes with extra buttons in case one button comes off. There were no signs of wear at the end of the test, indicating that the coat would last a long time.
The fit is slightly larger for a boxy double-breasted short coat look. The extra space is popular as it makes it easy to layer on sweaters, but if you want a coat that fits better, we recommend going one size smaller. It is also available in small and large sizes.
Zara Soft Oversized Coat
Depending on your budget or style needs, you may not be splurging on a coat in the market, and Zara’s oversized coats can give you a luxurious look and feel for less. Although it is made of polyester instead of wool, this fabric gives a high-quality feel. As soon as we got out of the box, we knew the coat was heavy and it would keep us warm in 30-degree weather. The oversized fit makes it perfect for layering over bulky outfits, and even if we’re wearing a few layers underneath, it won’t overheat as we stroll through this coat. While we like to leave it open and show off the clothes inside when we button it up, we feel “as comfortable as bugs” and the long length protects us from the wind. While we didn’t find any signs of damage at the end of the test, we did wish the buttons were sewn more securely.
Anne Klein Double Breasted Peacoat
For those who prefer a fitted coat rather than an oversized one, this double-breasted cropped coat is a timeless choice. We’ve found that the slim fit is very accurate and doesn’t have much wiggle room, so if you’re planning on wearing a thick sweater underneath, we recommend ordering a size one size larger. This short coat is made of wool and polyester and is very warm. If you’re out running errands, you may feel overheated, so it may be better worn to dinners, brunches, and special occasions. Rich hues such as magenta, red, and navy are complemented by the classic double-breasted bodice, which drew a wave of compliments when we wore it for a walk in the park. We ordered a small coat that fit just over our butt and was the ideal middle ground. It is also available in plus size. We did find a bit of scratching on the outer material, but this wasn’t a problem for us as our skin wasn’t in direct contact with the external material.
Abercrombie & Fitch Wool-Blend Dad Coat
Truth be told, it can be very difficult to find a coat with the right sleeves, shoulders, and length, especially if you’re shorter or taller than average. That’s why we appreciate the wide range of sizes of this Abercrombie and Fitch coat, which is available in small and tall sizes in addition to the standard fit. It also comes in a variety of different shades and prints, including houndstooth and tartan patterns, giving us all the options.
This material is made of polyester and wool and has a warm and felt-like feel. We did notice some wrinkles when we first took it out of the packaging and when we put on the coat for a while, but the wrinkles do go away with wear. We liked the stark look of this dad coat so much that we wore it every day during the test. The single-breasted buttons keep the jacket loose and cool, but it does allow air to flow in from the top and bottom, making this jacket more suitable for transitional weather than true winter.
Reformation Paley Double Breasted Coat
Wrapped in an oversized coat can provide blanket-like emotional support, but with a sharp design like this, we look even more elegant. While it’s oversized at the shoulders and waist, the sleeves aren’t too long for our petite figure, which makes this oversized jacket look intentional and not stolen from an old man. The coat is mid-calf and does a great job of keeping out the cold while allowing us to wear anything underneath. Our thickest sweater, yes, hoodie, checkout. Scarf? You’re right. Made from a blend of recycled wool and polyamide, it’s breathable, high-quality and sustainable. The only difficult part is choosing between beautiful beige or navy blue.
With Girls Wool Blend Belted Peacoat
Shawl collar coats are very elegant, and while they don’t provide the highest level of insulation, we must have one in our wardrobe. This coat from Avec Les Filles is ideal for transitional dressing. While this isn’t the type of coat you wear in a blizzard, it provides enough warmth in the fall and spring, not to mention that the two colors – cinnamon and light purple – complement the season. Polyester and wool work together to create a coat that tastes great to the touch and looks and has won a lot of compliments from strangers. Thanks to the detachable belt, we can accentuate the waist or opt for a larger blazer look. As veteran thrift shoppers, we can tell from the high-quality materials and construction that this coat can be worn for a long time.
